ALEX RODE INTO the Arrowhead camp under the cover of darkness, noting the Kimisar side didn’t appear to be any more active than usual. Hopefully, that meant they didn’t know anything about Bey Lissandra yet. The Norsari detachment rode straight up the wide path in the center of the tents, and by the time Alex’s feet hit the ground, the crown prince was at his side.

“You’re back much earlier than expected,” Robert said. “Tell me that means something good.” He glanced at the six men dismounting behind Alex. “Where’s Sage?”

“Not now.” Alex handed Surry’s reins to a sleepy page and patted the horse on the neck. The mare was exhausted after three days of hard riding. “I need to see the general.”

Outside Rob, Father and Colonel Traysden had been the only ones who knew of the meeting in Bey Lissandra. After updating them, Alex’s priority would be finding out if that information had somehow slipped outside the tight circle.

They headed in the direction of the command tent, his cousin filling him in on the last few days. “I insisted on a three-day recess, and then another day off the next Chapel Day. The past week was hell. Everyone always ended up shouting. It’s like they have no interest in making this succeed. I would’ve called an end to all this days ago if I weren’t covering for Sage’s meeting.”

Alex nodded grimly. That fit with Queen Zoraya’s assessment.

“And speaking of ending things,” continued Rob. “Underwood and his friends left three days ago. Not that I was sorry to lose them.”

Alex stopped in his tracks. The timing was more than suspicious. “And my father let him go?”

“Seeing as the baron wasn’t invited in the first place, there was no reason to stop him.” Rob grinned. “Though the general did send a Norsari company to follow.”

“Who’s leading it?”

“Captain Nadira.”

Alex nodded and continued walking. Ben Nadira would have been his choice, but with Cass staying with Sage and Lieutenant Hatfield continuing to Jovan as her false escort, the only experienced officer he had left with him was Lieutenant Tanner. “How did the Kimisar react to our baron and his underlings leaving?”

“He contributed little, so I don’t think they miss him.” The prince trotted to keep up. “But I was so tired of arguing with Nostin that I played sick yesterday and canceled talks.” Rob glanced back at the six Norsari. “How did your meeting go? Is Lady Clare with Sage?”

“Not now, dammit.”

They reached General Quinn’s tent and swept inside without waiting for permission or announcement. Alex’s father jumped to his feet from his chair at the long table, and after salutes and a few seconds of searching Alex’s face, he looked relieved. “When I heard you were coming without certain members of your party, I was concerned,” the general said. “But they’re well?”

His father been worried about Sage, which was gratifying. “I left everyone in good health,” Alex said simply.

The general nodded, and Alex glanced around. Colonels Traysden and Murray were present, as well as the Duke of Crescera and the man who attended every meeting with him.
